Biodegradation and ecotoxicological assessment of pectin production wastewater.

چکیده
The chemical composition of pectin production wastewater and its toxicity during biological treatment were investigated. Samples of wastewater from different steps of a pectin production wastewater biological treatment plant were investigated including the influent of the treatment (1), after denitrification tank (2), after anaerobic treatment (3) and final effluent (4). The conventional physicochemical characteristics of samples did not indicate wastewater toxicity. However, toxicity assessments carried out on Vibrio fischeri and Scenedesmus subspicatus indicated low EC50 values. The fractionation of the samples using an XAD resin showed that the toxicity was associated with the organic matter. Wastewater apparent molecular mass distributions were 14.3, 25.0, 24.4 and 29.6 kDa for samples 1-4, respectively. Finally, characteristics of the sample by pyrolisis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-CG-MS) demonstrated its polyphenolic nature and a 23% increase in the levels of such compounds after the first biological treatment step.

Biodegradation of olive mill wastewater by Trichosporon cutaneum and Geotrichum candidum.
Olive oil production generates large volumes of wastewater. These wastewaters are characterised by high chemical oxygen demand (COD), high content of microbial growth-inhibiting compounds such as phenolic compounds and tannins, and dark colour. The aim of this study was to investigate biodegradation of olive mill wastewater (OMW) by yeasts Trichosporon cutaneum and Geotrichum candidum. The yeas...
متن کاملChitosan-pectin-alginate as a novel scaffold for tissue engineering applications
Chitosan-pectin, chitosan-alginate and chitosan-pectin-alginate scaffolds were prepared by freeze-drying technique. The physicochemical characteristics of the scaffolds were characterized by FTIR and SEM. The biological activities like antibacterial assessment, swelling behavior, biodegradation and cytotoxicity study of the prepared scaffolds were evaluated. The results show high swelling prope...
متن کاملReaction kinetics and validity of BOD test for domestic wastewater released in marine ecosystems.
With urbanization of coastal cities, marine pollution is becoming a severe problem. The rates of biodegradation, decomposition, and ratification of pollutants get slowed down due to salinity. The higher temperatures prevalent in tropical regions significantly affect reaction rates. Multiple factors influence the rate of biodegradation, making the process complex. Hence, prediction and evaluatio...
متن کاملEvaluation of Aerobic and Anaerobic Biodegradability and Toxicity Assessment of Real Pharmaceutical Wastewater from Industrial Production of Antibiotics
This study evaluates aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of a real pharmaceutical wastewater, which focuses on antibiotics production. Zahn-Wellens and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) methodologies were applied in order to verify the wastewater’s biodegradability and Microtox® analysis was performed for toxicity tests. Tests achieved more than 89% an...
متن کاملProduction of Xanthanases by Paenibacillus spp.: Complete Xanthan Degradation and Possible Applications
Background: A number of microorganisms and their enzymes have been reported as xanthan depolymerizers. Paenibacillus species are well-known polysaccharide hydrolyzing bacteria. However, Paenibacillus alginolyticus and Paenibacillus sp.XD are the only species in the genus which are now known to degrade xanthan. Objectives: Complete biodegradation of the xan...
